Overhaul or new cylinder?
Answer seven short questions and see whether an overhaul, a detailed inspection, or a new build is the right choice for your cylinder, with the reasoning behind each recommendation.
Each answer shifts the balance between overhaul and new manufacturing. 7 questions left.
This tool gives a preliminary indication; the final decision is made after dismantling and measuring the cylinder. For details see our hydraulic cylinder overhaul guide.
When is a refurbishment enough?
If the symptoms are caused by seal wear and the rod and barrel surfaces are sound, refurbishment is usually the most economical and fastest solution. Light rod scratches can be corrected with coating, and light barrel scratches can be removed by honing.
When is a new cylinder needed?
If the barrel has deep scratches or ovality that honing cannot remove, if the body has cracks or weld damage, or if a different force or size is required because the application has changed, new manufacturing is the better choice. For details, see our article on hydraulic cylinder refurbishment.
